I think I might finally believe that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Well, if you promise that breakfast will always be as delicious as this, then i'll be willing to wake with the sun to consume breakfast. Partaking in some Taiwanese breakfast is one of the easiest things you can do since there is such a prevalence of these type of vendors in Taiwan. Clearly they aren't all created equal (although to be honest, any random vendor probably would be rather tasty) so do yourself a favor, take a little stroll to 永和豆漿大王 and start your day off right.
Work station.
To be expected, it is a little shop that's nicely located between the Daan MRT stop and the Technology Building MRT stop. There will be a big red awning broadcasting its location so you'll have a hard time missing it if you came in search of it specifically. Grab yourself a seat if you can, browse the menu hanging from the wall, and make your way up to the counter to deliver your order with the proprietors.
Affordable... AND delicious!?! Why thank you.
The go to items in my opinion are the xiou long bao (soup dumplings), the salty soy milk, and a yiou tiou (something i hesitantly describe as a salty Chinese donut) wrapped in a sou bing. We also had a dan bing (egg wrapped in thin pancake), a sticky rice roll, and some cold soy milk to wash it all down with. Everything was tasty, and they promptly serve you your food while you are at the counter.
The yiou tiou with sou bring had a magnificent crunch to it.. and when dipped in the soy milk? Party in your mouth time.
Salty Soy Milk
Dan Bing.
In a word, the salty soy milk was amazing, in a few words... it was holy crap that was good. It really is more soup that soy milk, but i'm not going to split hairs here. The pickled vegetables in the soy milk gives it a added kick, and I urge everyone to give it a try. Although I do understand how it might not be to everyone's taste. The coagulated milk could be off putting to some, and the flavors of the salty soy milk might not what some people would associate with something bearing that name.
The xiao long bao however, that should be right in the wheel house of anyone who likes pampering their taste buds. They are puffier than the ones that are found at Ding Tai Fung, and aren't as soupy. They definitely make them denser here, with more meat packed into each xiao long bao. It is difficult to say which one is better, because they really are rather different for two products bearing the same name. Just realize that they are both delicious and lets just move on.
Yonghe Soy Milk King - 永和豆漿大王 was a great way to indoctrinate my friend to the food potential that Taiwan possesses. Needless to say, he, like me, came away very pleased with everything that we tried, and it has already been bubbling in my mind of when I should make my hasty return. Everything came out to under 300NT for the three of us (the xiao long bao being the priciest item at 80NT), and we walked away with both our bellies and wallets full. A good start to the day.
Overall Yonghe Soy Milk King - 永和豆漿大王 receives :
-Til next time-
